UP Government Tightens Recruitment Rules: Candidates Facing Serious Criminal Charges to Be Denied Government Jobs
Political tensions have intensified in Uttar Pradesh following the Yogi Adityanath government's new recruitment policy, which introduces stricter rules for character verification of candidates seeking government jobs. Under the revised policy, provisional appointments can be granted before the completion of character verification. However, candidates involved in serious criminal cases will not be eligible for government employment.
The policy specifically excludes individuals facing serious allegations involving murder, rape, examination paper leaks, cheating rackets and cyber fraud. Candidates who conceal their criminal records or provide false information during the recruitment process may also face cancellation of their appointments.
As part of the verification process, police will examine candidates' backgrounds in their home districts as well as in any other district where they have lived for more than one year during the past five years.
The decision has triggered a political confrontation between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Samajwadi Party (SP). The Samajwadi Party has accused the state government of creating fear among young people instead of focusing on employment generation. The party argues that protesting against government policies is a constitutional right in a democratic country.
SP leader Anurag Bhadauria said that opposing government policies through democratic means is not wrong and that the government should concentrate on creating more employment opportunities rather than intimidating job seekers.
On the other hand, the BJP has defended the government's decision. BJP leader Alok Awasthi stated that governments can be changed through elections in a democratic system, but individuals who attempt to overthrow an elected government or change the system through violence should not be allowed to enter government service.
The Uttar Pradesh government has also tightened its rules for issuing character certificates. According to the new provisions, individuals associated with organisations that seek to change the government or the existing system through violent activities may be considered ineligible for government jobs.
The new policy has sparked a wider debate over the balance between maintaining discipline in public services, ensuring fair recruitment and protecting the democratic right to peaceful protest.
