Revanth Reddy Questions PM Modi Over US Trip Denial
Hyderabad: Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has stepped up his criticism of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Centre after his proposed visit to the United States was denied political clearance.
Reddy questioned why permission was denied for his US trip, which was planned as part of Telangana’s efforts to attract global investments, educational partnerships and business opportunities. He also accused the Centre of adopting a political approach towards Telangana.
“You Want To Stop Telangana?”
In a sharp political attack, Revanth Reddy alleged that the Centre's decision could discourage companies and institutions from considering Telangana as an investment destination.
He questioned whether the Centre wanted to stop Telangana from progressing and argued that development and the interests of the state's youth should be kept above political differences.
Reddy has also described the denial as disrespectful to the people of Telangana.
Why Was Revanth Reddy’s US Visit Denied?
The Telangana government had planned a UK-US tour for Revanth Reddy and a delegation under its Telangana Rising initiative.
While the UK leg of the trip received clearance, the Ministry of External Affairs did not approve the proposed US visit. The MEA said the programme proposed for the US leg was “not appropriate” for the office held and therefore political clearance was not granted.
The proposed US itinerary included visits to institutions such as Harvard University, MIT, Northeastern University and Virginia Tech, with discussions focused on education, research and partnerships.
Centre and Telangana Government Offer Different Views
The controversy has now developed into a political dispute between the Telangana government and the Centre.
The Telangana side has questioned the decision and argued that international outreach is important for attracting investment and creating opportunities for the state's youth. The Centre, however, has maintained that political clearance is assessed by the MEA and that the proposed US programme did not meet the required criteria.
Reports have also emerged about possible meetings with US political figures during the proposed visit. The Indian Express reported that meetings with US Vice President JD Vance and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani were among the possible engagements, although Revanth Reddy's office said the meeting with Mamdani was tentative.
Telangana’s Global Investment Push
The proposed US visit was part of Telangana's wider effort to build international partnerships and attract investment.
During the UK leg, Reddy held discussions with Oxford University over executive education and research programmes for Hyderabad. He also met representatives from Liverpool over potential partnerships in life sciences, technology, sports and the creative economy.
Political Battle Intensifies
The dispute has added another layer to the ongoing political confrontation between the Congress-led Telangana government and the BJP-led Centre.
For Revanth Reddy, the issue is not merely about a cancelled foreign trip but about Telangana’s ability to independently pursue investment and global partnerships. For the Centre, the decision is being presented as part of the normal process for granting political clearance to chief ministers travelling abroad.
The cancellation of Revanth Reddy’s proposed US visit has triggered a fresh political clash between Telangana and the Centre. While Reddy has accused the Modi government of discouraging Telangana’s development and investment prospects, the MEA has said the proposed programme was not appropriate for political clearance.
The controversy is likely to remain a key Telangana-Centre political issue, particularly as the state continues its push to attract global investment and educational partnerships.
